Former three-division titlist Nonito Donaire, one of boxing’s best pound-for-pound fighters, and his wife, Rachel, got a bit more excitement than they bargained for while celebrating on July 4th.

While spending time with friends, the young son of one of the friends was swimming when he disappeared under the water, Donaire tweeted.

“Rachel didn't hesitate to jump in to save the child but injured herself in the process,” he tweeted. “She moved so quickly it scared me.”

Rachel saved the young boy but did so while pregnant. Very pregnant. She is due with the couple’s first child, a son, later this month.

The incident caused Rachel some pain. She woke up the next day with a sharp pain, and Donaire said she was “admitted into the ER [emergency room] for fetal monitoring. She’s full term but not due for another 17 days. Praying things are OK.”

Apparently, things are just fine. According to Donaire, Rachel was diagnosed with a strained ligament (didn’t say which one), and the good news is that “doctors say [the] baby is unaffected” and that she was ordered to bed rest for a few days.

Donaire (31-2, 20 KOs) lost his junior featherweight title by decision in a unification bout with Guillermo Rigondeaux on April 15. Donaire is due back in action in the fall.--Source:ESPN
