Massive canyon found under Greenland ice

A canyon similar in scale, if not in grandeur, to Arizona's Grand Canyon lies beneath Greenland's ice sheet, according to a new study.

This photo shows an iceberg calved by Greenland's Petermann Glacier in 2009. New studies of the landscape beneath the glacier show a vast canyon. Nick Cobbing/Greenpeace/Reuters/File

Running from deep within the island's interior north to Greenland's northwest coast, the canyon measures at least 470 miles long, six miles across at its widest, and up to 2,600 feet deep – reaching its widest and deepest points near the coast. The Grand Canyon, by comparison, is 277 miles long, 18 miles wide, and 6,000 feet deep.

The portrait points to how little scientists know about what lies beneath the world's great ice sheets. It also could help researchers understand how the ice sheet and melt water are working together to feed outlet glaciers along a coast where glaciers have been thinning at an increasing pace within the past decade.

Mapping Greenland's hidden landscape is important  "so we can understand how the ice sheet is presently routing mass out toward its edges and how the ice sheet and water underneath the ice will interact," says Mark Fahnsetock, a geophysicist at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks.

In addition, the discovery could help solve a longstanding riddle: Why does Antarctica's ice sheet have lakes underneath it, but Greenland's ice sheet apparently does not? For the region the canyon traverses, the answer may be that the island has more efficient plumbing, says Dr. Fahnsetock, who was not involved in the study.

The first hints that the island's ice sheet, nearly two miles thick, was hiding such a feature emerged in the later 1990s. But the evidence was limited. No one anticipated a canyon of such magnitude.

The canyon lacks features that would signal it was formed by glaciers, suggesting that its predates the initial appearance of glaciers there about 38 million years ago, according to the team led by Jonathan Bamber, a glaciologist at the University of Bristol in Britain. His team built a profile of the canyon using 40 years of ice-penetrating radar data, which show the canyon meandering in ways that suggest it was carved by a large river system.

The team concludes that water would have flowed through the canyon constantly until Greenland's island-wide ice sheet formed 3.5 million years ago. Once the ice sheet formed, its pressure would have pushed water at the base out of the canyon in some locations. But the canyon would have remained a major route for under-ice water as it flowed toward the coast and under what today is known as the Petermann Glacier.

That could help explain why the ice shelf at the end of the Petermann Glacier has been prone to high rates of melting. The ice shelf is grounded in a fjord, and scientists have thought that warm sea water was entering the fjord and melting the shelf from underneath.

Now, it turns out that the shelf also could be under assault form melt water moving north through the canyon in what the research team calls "well-organized" flows. Indeed, scientists have uncovered deep, wide channels carved upward into the underside of the shelf, suggesting that the underside is exposed to relatively focused, rapidly flowing melt water. Researchers also have discovered a hydrothermal heat source near the northern end of the canyon, which would increase the amount of melt water at the base of the ice as it moves over the hot spot.

A formal presentation of the results is set to appear in Friday issue of the journal Science.

For Eric Rignot, who has mapped Greenland's coastal areas, including the northern end of the canyon, the extent of the canyon is an eye-opener.

"It didn't occur to me that the canyon could go that far inland," says Dr. Rignot, a glaciologist at the University of California at Irvine and a senior scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "We did not even bother looking at that."

Researchers are keeping a keen eye on the region.

The northern end of the canyon represents a conduit for ice moving down from the ice sheet, but it also represents a pathway for ocean water to migrate inland to continue melting the glacier from underneath if the Petermann ice shelf breaks up and the glacier retreats.

"The ocean water will basically follow the ice along that canyon," he says.

If nothing else, the study "shows how little we still know about the bedrock below large continental ice sheets," said Michael Studinger, project scientist for a NASA ice-monitoring program whose data played a significant role in uncovering the canyon, in a prepared statement.--Source: The Christian Science Monitor

Hello Kitty, the sweet and business-savvy feline’s air merchandise, is coming to America.

The cute kitty air flights, already raking in a worldwide revenue of $5 billion a year, has plans to invade American soil on a Hello Kitty-themed plane.

Starting on Sept. 18, a Boeing 777 aircraft decked out with Hello Kitty headrests, snack boxes, toilet paper and much more will be flying from Taipei to Los Angeles three times every week.

Five Airbus A330 Hello Kitty jets are already flying over Asia, CNN reports, the result of a partnership between Taiwan’s EVA Air and the Japanese cartoon company Sanrio.

The cat will be featured front and center on boarding passes, baggage tags, and check-in kiosks. Inside the plane, nauseated passengers will be able to hold onto Hello Kitty airsickness bags for comfort. They’ll open their meal boxes to find cheese, butter, and vegetables shaped like Hello Kitty’s face or her most famous accessory, a tiny red hair bow.

And the bathrooms will feature Hello Kitty toiletries, making escaping from her presence virtually impossible.

Even the flight attendants will be outfitted with Hello Kitty aprons.

Sanrio created Hello Kitty in 1974, The New York Times reports. The first Kitty-themed planes took off in 2005.

Although the cute cat has become an international celebrity, she’s slowly losing her ranking as Japan’s top-grossing cartoon character.

According to Business Traveller, the 36-year-old Kitty is eyeing Europe as her next airline destination.--Source: NY Daily News

Michael Douglas' 'oral sex' cancer caused split?

Michael Douglas' revelation he got throat cancer through oral sex was the final straw for Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones

The Hollywood couple announced on Wednesday they are to separate after 13 years to "evaluate and work on their marriage" and Catherine is said to have wanted the split after Michael revealed his cancer was caused by the HPV virus, contracted through oral sexual contact.

However, the 68-year-old star didn't make it clear he had contracted the virus before he met his wife.

A source told The Sun newspaper: "It all went downhill from there."

Bipolar disorder

As well as the Wall Street actor's cancer battle - which he beat in 2011 - Catherine, 43, has been battling bipolar II disorder, which has led to her going to rehab for depression twice, most recently in May.

It was at the end of that month the couple decided to split, although they are thought to have been leading separate lives for some time.

A source living near their mansion in Bedford, Connecticut, told The Sun newspaper: "We have not seen much of Michael here with Catherine for about 18 months.

"Most of his friends are in New York. He likes the city and she likes horses and playing golf. They're like chalk and cheese."

Michael - who has children Dylan, 13, and Carys, 10, with Catherine - is currently holidaying alone in Europe. He was pictured on Wednesday aboard a friend's yacht off the coast of Sardinia, appearing pensive ahead of the Deauville Film Festival in France, the event where he first met Catherine in 1998.

'True love takes work'

Michael had recently hinted their struggles had only served to make their relationship stronger.

He said: "True love takes work. Love is an extraordinary feeling that comes from the bottom of your soul, but has to be nurtured, you know. The thing I've learned about getting older is you can't take love for granted," he said.

"You protect it, nurture it and it grows and after one's initial, physical, emotional aspects, it becomes deeper."

Catherine is believed to be staying in New York with the couple's children.--Source: News24.com

Call center agent kills self in motel suicide

A call center agent hanged himself inside a motel room before dawn yesterday after losing more than P200,000 in cash during a robbery last Thursday.

A typical call center agent
Female investigator PO3 Jaime de Jesus identified the suicide as call center agent Alexander Santos, 40, a resident of Standford St., Barangay E. Rodriguez, Cubao, Quezon City.

De Jesus said that Santos was found dead at around 4 a.m. inside the bathroom of Room 103 of Yale Apartelle located along Yale St., also in Barangay E. Rodriguez.

The investigator said the victim was already on the floor with a nylon cord around his neck. He said the nylon cord may have snapped.

Also found on the table of the room were a suicide note, a return to work order from the victim’s company, and his statement before the Cubao Police Station about a robbery incident last Thursday.

The suicide note only contained an apology addressed to the parents and wife of Santos, the investigator cited.

De Jesus learned that Santos checked in alone at the apartelle at around 10:30 a.m. Friday.

According to the apartelle cashier, Alexander Base, Santos gave instructions to wake him up at around 3:30 a.m. Saturday as he explained he needed to go somewhere.

However, when Base went to Santos’s room at 3:30 a.m. yesterday, there was no response from the victim which eventually led the motel staff to open the door using a spare key.

The investigator learned from the victim’s family that Santos also has lending business and most of his clients were fellow call center agents.

However, De Jesus learned that Santos has been absent without leave (AWOL) for around a week.

The family of Santos thought that he was still working since he leaves home on the usual hours he goes to work.

The investigator also learned that Santos got robbed last Thursday where he lost more than P200,000 in cash as well as the ATM cards of his co-workers.

De Jesus explained that Santos withdraws from the ATMs the payment of the loans. --Source: Tempo

'Twerk' 'selfie' added to Oxford dictionary

$

“Twerk,” a provocative dance move that has gone viral, and “selfie,” a photograph taken of oneself using a phone, are two new words added to the Oxford English Dictionary Wednesday.

Oxford English Dictionary
The dictionary has included words such as “twerk,” “selfie,” “digital detox” and the social media meaning of the verb “unlike” in its latest quarterly update to reflect the increasing use of technology and social media.

Spokeswoman Katherine Connor Martin said the dictionary, which is one of the largest dictionaries in the world and dates back 150 years, adds about 1,000 new entries to its online version every year.

She said the word “twerk” has been around for 20 years but has generated enough evidence of usage to be added to its online dictionaries, with U.S. pop star Miley Cyrus hitting headlines this week for “twerking” at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Arising in the early 1990s, the word is described in the dictionary as “a dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance.”

“The current public reaction to twerking is reminiscent in some ways of how the twisting craze was regarded in the early 1960s, when it was first popularised by Chubby Checker’s song, ‘The Twist,’” Connor Martin said.

“Only time will tell if twerking will similarly be embraced by the general public,” Martin added.

Other words such as “unlike,” the withdrawal of approval on social media, “digital detox,” where a person refrains from using smartphones or computers, and “fomo” or fear of missing out – anxiety that an interesting event may be happening elsewhere – have also been added.

“Omnishambles,” a situation that has been comprehensively mismanaged, characterized by a string of blunders and miscalculations, is also among the new entries, originating from the British political comedy TV series “The Thick of It.”

The OED kicked up a fuss recently when it became one of several dictionaries to add a new, apparently contradictory definition to the word “literally”: “Used for emphasis while not being literally true.”--Source: The Daily Star

A pilot for the Philippine Air Force and a young man from Cavite emerged as the top two candidates to become the first-ever Filipino astronaut.

Air Force pilot Lt. Mario Mendoza Jr., 31, and Evan Rey Datuin, 24, bested 400 other applicants in the AXE Apollo Space Academy Philippines’ as they battled it out at the AXE Apollo National Challenge at Bonifacio Global City on Saturday.

To test their endurance, the last 50 contestants were asked to stand in poles while accomplishing various physical tasks such as lifting 15-pound metal weights.

Mendoza and Datuin will be sent to the Axe Apollo International Space Camp in Orlando, Florida for training. One of them is guaranteed to travel to space in 2014.

The two will also be joined by a third candidate to be picked via an electronic raffle promo. The three candidates from the Philippines will experience astronaut training in the US this December together with over a hundred other candidates from all over the world.

“It’s been over seven months since we started this nationwide search for the first Pinoy astronaut. Now that we are down to the Top 400, I think it’s really starting to sink in that pretty soon we will be sending one of these people to space,” AXE Philippines brand manager Gem Laforteza said in a statement.

“I’m proud to have been involved in the selection process for the first Filipino astronaut. Naniniwala talaga ako na talentado ang mga Pinoy. We deserve this opportunity. And that’s why we’ve tried our best to make sure that whoever gets it really deserves the one-in-a-hundred-million chance to go to space,” added AXE Apollo national selection director Luis Manzano.

The AXE Apollo National Challenges, organized by AXE and cable channel AXN, tested the candidates’ skill, determination, and what AXE calls the “hero-factor.”

The first challenge was done in virtual space where over 4,000 of the top-voted candidates were invited to take an online test designed to select the top 400 applicants based on their intellectual prowess.

The next challenge involved a rigorous test of physical fitness, with the candidates undergoing a military-inspired obstacle course, from which the top 50 hopefuls emerged.

Lastly, the candidates were asked to stand on pegs in a challenge called “the last hero standing,” a grueling test of willpower designed to select the most determined candidates.

“I think anyone would be happy with making it to the Top 3 who will be sent to the US for astronaut training. Even if you don’t make it to space, Space Camp is still a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Pero siyempre, iba pa rin ‘yung masasabi mo na nag-bakasyon ka sa space,” said AXE Apollo national selection director Sam Gogna of the radio program Boys Night Out.--Source: ABS-CBN News

An alleged sex video of “Eat Bulaga” host Wally Bayola and EB Babe dancer Yosh has been circulating online since Monday night, September 2.

The comedian is married with five children, while it is not immediately known whether the alleged EB Babe member is in a relationship.

The 6:14-minute video clip shows a couple, who look like Wally and  EB Babe Yosh, engaged in a steamy sex.

Wally, 41, is a host at popular noontime variety show Eat Bulaga aired Monday through Saturday on GMA-7 television.

EB Babe Yosh, meanwhile, is a member of Eat Bulaga’s in-house sexy dance group EB Babes.

The couple on the sex video, towards the end of the clip, looked at the camera and smiled. The guy then gave the girl a peck on the lips.

The issue of leaked intimate private videos challenges the Anti-Photo and Video Voyeurism Act of 2009 authored at the height of sex scandals involving local celebrities. The law was the product of a Senate investigation that led to the eventual revocation of Hayden Kho’s medical license.

Just recently, an intimate video of Parokya ni Edgar vocalist Chito Miranda and girlfriend Neri Naig was also leaked online. Chito sought help from the NBI (National Bureau of Investigation) to pin down the uploader of the video.

Meanwhile, Eat Bulaga executives have not issued any statement as of posting time.--Source: Yahoo News/Inquirer.net

BIR requires doctors, lawyers, professionals to post rates at offices

The Bureau of Internal Revenue is set to issue a directive for doctors, lawyers and other professionals to post visibly in their clinics and offices the rates they charge to customers.

BIR requires doctors, lawyers, professionals to post rates at offices

The directive is aimed at promoting transparency and discouraging tax evasion among self-employed professionals, a sector where tax evasion is believed to be rampant.

The disclosure of rates charged by professionals is expected to aid in tax audits conducted by BIR personnel.

BIR Commissioner Kim Henares said the BIR has started drafting the revenue memorandum circular (RMC) requiring the posting of rates and would release the circular soon.

“We will be issuing the RMC soon. This is part of the overall effort to curb tax evasion,” Henares told reporters.

The BIR is zeroing in on professionals, among several other sectors, as it aims to boost revenue collection. Henares cited the serious need to implement stricter measures against tax evasion because lost potential revenues from the illegal activity have been deemed significant.

She said that out of the estimated 1.7 million professionals registered with the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), only about 400,000 have registered as taxpayers with the BIR.

Moreover, those who are registered with the BIR are believed to be significantly under-declaring their incomes.

The BIR earlier released a report showing that the average annual tax payment by self-employed professionals stood at less than P6,000 each.  The tax bureau believes an average self-employed professional should be paying at least P100,000 in annual taxes.

Henares said the BIR has asked PRC to help in the anti-tax evasion drive. In particular, PRC is asked to require the submission of income tax returns for renewal of professional licenses.

She said PRC would soon include ITRs in the list of its requirements.

Efforts to curb tax evasion come amid the BIR’s assignment of collecting P1.253 trillion in taxes this year to help the government afford its rising expenditure requirements.

The BIR’s tax collection target for the year is higher by 18 percent than the P1.06 trillion it collected in 2012.

Its collection goal for the year is meant to help the government keep its budget deficit at or below the ceiling of P238 billion.

The BIR accounts for nearly 70 percent of the national government’s revenue collection.--Source: Inquirer.net

Senate witness links Enrile, Estrada, Revilla to Napoles pork scam

Senate Minority Leader Juan Ponce-Enrile,  and Senators  Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada and Ramon “Bong” Revilla  Jr.  were identified by another witness in the Senate investigation into the “pork barrel” funds as the  ones who had  allegedly  endorsed  their  priority development  assistance fund (PDAF) to   non-government  organizations  linked to Janet Lim-Napoles.

Senators Jinggoy Estrada (below) poses with Janet Lim-Napoles and Senator Bong Revilla. The two senators, along with Senator Enrile (inset) were linked anew to the Napoles pork scam.
Senators Jinggoy Estrada (below) poses with Janet Lim-Napoles and Senator Bong Revilla.
The two senators, along with Senator Enrile (inset) were linked anew to the Napoles pork scam.

“I’m very sure of the three senators— Revilla, Estrada and  Enrile,”  said Rhodora Mendoza, former  vice president for administration and finance of National Agribusiness Corporation (NABCOR).

NABCOR was  the implementing  agency allegedly used by some legislators to funnel  their  PDAF to  dubious  NGOs.

Mendoza  was not  among those invited as resource persons in the ongoing hearing of the Senate blue ribbon committee but she was called from the gallery  upon  the suggestion of  former president of NABCOR, Alan Javellana.

Mendoza, under questioning by committee chairman Senator Teofisto Guingona  III admitted that she had  met  whistle-blower Benhur Luy several times because the latter had been following up  about his NGO, Social Development Program for Farmers Foundations Inc. (SDPFFI).

It was  Luy, who she said introduced  her  to Napoles.

“I met her once… I was invited in the thanksgiving mass  in Discovery  Suites,”  Mendoza told the committee, referring to Napoles, the alleged mastermind  in the P10 billion “pork barrel” scam.

And when asked who were the legislators who had coursed their PDAF through  NABCOR, Mendoza  mentioned the names of the three senators.

Revilla, Enrile, and Estrada allegedly  endorsed their PDAF to SDPFF1, Magsasakang Ani para sa Magsasaka Foundation Inc., and People’s Organization for Progress and Development Foundation Inc – all linked to Napoles.

Mendoza said Enrile endorsed the use of his PDAF for  all three NGOs, while Estrada allegedly funnelled his funds to  SDPFII and MAMFI while Revilla’s PDAF went to MAMFI.

The witness  also mentioned the names of  some congressmen  whose PDAF were allegedly transferred to either  SDPFII and MAMFI.

Mendoza said it was only Enrile, who  used his PDAF to  the People’s Organization for Progress and Development Foundation Inc.

Most of the legislators themselves, she said,  signed the endorsement letters  and  the  releases of funds to the NGOs while a few had assigned somebody  from their offices.

She said she did not find anything suspicious  about the transactions.

“Wala naman, they are complying so far,”  Mendoza said, responding to  queries.--Source: Inquirer.net

Miss World 2013 skips bikini contest

The Miss World contest says it will skip its usual bikini contest this year during its annual pageant on the Indonesian island of Bali.

Pageant officials say the contest will be adapting to the cultural norms of the conservative, Muslim majority country, where some conservatives have criticized the event.

Miss World organizer Budi Rustanto says the bikini competition will be transformed this year into a beach fashion show with all the contestants clad in traditional Balinese sarongs.

"Everything that is used during the event in Indonesia, like batik and kebaya traditional blouse, will have to be created by Indonesian designers," he said. "They also must use materials and foods from Indonesia. In short, they have to help promote tourism, to create the image that Indonesia is a safe and comfortable place, to further encourage investment in this country."

But the change does not seem to have satisfied many of the conservative Islamic critics of the event.

A number of scholars and Islamic organizations have urged the Indonesian government to cancel the pageant, saying it does not correspond to the values of Indonesian culture.

The Chairman of the Governing Board of the Centre Youth of Muhammadiyah, Saleh Partaonan Daulay, says there are more dignified ways to hold such a competition in Indonesia.

"Miss World is not compatible with Indonesia’s culture, traditions, and local wisdom," he said. "We do not judge a woman just by her physical beauty, since you have to judge someone as a whole, not just by looking at her facial and physical appearances, nor the way she walks."

Supporters of the contest say it will help promote tourism in Bali, which relies on visitors for a large part of its local economy. The competition opens on the majority Hindu island this week, and the finale will be held near Jakarta on September 28.

Meanwhile actress Megan Young, who bested 24 other contestants for the coveted title, will represent the Philippines in the upcoming beauty pageant. Source: VOA

During a recent press conference announcing the network's line-up of new programs, TV5 President Noel Lorenzana and Chief Entertainment Content Officer Wilma Galvante were asked as to what's ahead for Revillame's "Wowowillie."

Lorenzana confirmed that the show is indeed ending next month, as quoted by entertainment news site Yahoo! OMG in a report published Thursday.

He added that the TV host's contract will no longer be renewed. "If Willie comes back, it will be under new circumstances, a new format, and that's a big if," Lorenzana said.

Various iterations of Revillame's variety programs, dating back to "Wowowee" as it aired on ABS-CBN from 2005 to 2010, have been fraught with controversies.

The 2010 primetime program "Willing Willie," Revillame's first show on TV5, was accused of child abuse when a 6-year-old contestant was supposedly made to perform as a "macho dancer."

The controversy, which involved advertisers pulling out from the show, prompted Revillame to announce it would go on hiatus. A month later, it resumed as the reformatted "Wiltime Bigtime."

Yet another revamp as "Wowowillie" marked the program's transfer to a noontime slot in January this year. The show once again drew controversy, however, when Revillame went on an on-air tirade against co-host Ethel Booba for allegedly disrespecting him.

Dared by Revillame to resign from his show, Ethel Booba never returned as a co-host on "Wowowillie."

On the same program in May, Revillame announced his plans to retire, saying "Wowowillie" will air its last episode on October 12.

"Alam ninyo, may mga personal na rason na hindi ko na sasabihin sa inyo. Ako muna'y magpapahinga ng ilang buwan, ng isang taon o anuman...Tatapusin ko na lang po ang kontrata ko sa TV5," he said.--Source: ABS-CBN News

Online petition wants typhoons named after corrupt 'pork' politicians

The petition on Change.org to name destructive typhoons after "corrupt politicians and grafters" had gathered more than 1,300 signatures as of 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

"Sign up now! Let this be a constant reminder of how our hard-earned money has been stolen or misspent by corrupt politicians," said Ismael Tomelden, who started the petition.

While Tolemden did not suggest a list of names of the supposed corrupt politicians, he said the damage caused by their corruption is "so great."

"The devastation they cause is so great... Mother Nature can't even compete with them for the destruction of life and property," he said.

He added the petition should be "a constant reminder of how our hard-earned money has been stolen or misspent by corrupt politicians."

PAGASA uses four lists of names for tropical typhoons and cyclones, on a rotation basis. Each list has 26 names and 10 auxiliary names.--Source: GMA News/Graphics from Rappler

Rex Maralit, 44, an officer in the Equal Employment Opportunity office at NYPD headquarters, was charged along with Wilfredo Maralit, 48, a Customs and Border Patrol officer at Los Angeles airport, and Ariel Maralit, 43, who lives in the Philippines.

The Fil-Am brothers allegedly bought weapons from U.S. dealers, sometimes seeking discounts based on their law enforcement ties, and used false descriptions such as "sliding industrial door track" to ship them for distribution to customers in the Philippines.

The weapons, some of which were broken down before shipment, included a .50-caliber semi-automatic rifle officials said was "capable of penetrating body armor, exterior walls of buildings and even aircraft."

The three brothers were charged with conspiracy to violate the Arms Export Control Act and to engage in unlicensed firearms dealing. They face up to five years in prison on each charge.

Rex Maralit, of Lawrenceville, N.J., was held without bail after a brief proceeding in Brooklyn federal court. He did not enter a plea. His lawyer said he hopes to put together a bail package by next week, but prosecutors said they will oppose his pretrial release.

Wilfredo Maralit was to appear in court late Friday in California, where prosecutors said they will seek his transfer to Brooklyn. Ariel Maralit, officials said, is not in custody, but is being sought overseas for extradition to the United States.

"A case like this is disheartening to the entire department," NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said in a statement.--Source: Newsday

The Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) will be opened to light vehicles starting on Tuesday afternoon, the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) said Saturday.

SCTEX

BCDA officials said the reopening of the SCTEX was made possible following the opening of the Bailey Bridge that would allow motorists to pass through the Clark-Porac segment of the SCTEX.

Arnel Paciano Casanova, BCDA president and chief executive, said the Bailey Bridge would be opened to traffic starting at 2 p.m. and would reconnect Clark to Subic.

“We recognize the role of the SCTEX in the socio-economic growth and development of Central Luzon. That is why the BCDA made sure that the closed segment of the expressway be opened to traffic at the least possible time without compromising the safety of the motorists,” Casanova said.

Last August 19, rains brought by tropical storm Maring caused soil erosion at the banks of the Pasig-Potrero River damaging a segment that serves as an approach to the Pasig-Potrero Bridge leading to the SCTEX.

The Subic–Clark–Tarlac Expressway is a 93.77-kilometer four-lane expressway north of Manila, in the Philippines. --Source: Philstar

Six senators gave pork to Napoles NGOs in 2012

At least six senators allowed their 2012 Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) or commonly known as "pork barrel funds" to be used by questionable livelihood projects of Janet Lim-Napoles’ dummy groups, according to a 2012 report of the Commission on Audit (COA) and the Department of Budget and Management (DBM).

The reports on the websites of the COA and the DBM showed that the activities of Napoles, the alleged mastermind behind a P10-billion swindling scheme, went on not only for much of the graft-ridden administration of then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo but also  continued well into the “daang matuwid” regime of President Aquino.

Mentioned in the reports were Senators Juan Ponce Enrile, Jinggoy Estrada, Ramon Revilla Jr., Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Vicente Sotto III and Loren Legarda. They allegedly allowed the nongovernment organizations (NGOs) controlled by Napoles access to their allocations under the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF).

All six senators denied any wrongdoing.

The PDAF, or pork barrel, is meant to ease rural poverty and provide relief to storm victims, among many others. In many cases, however, the PDAF has become a source of kickbacks for lawmakers.

In the 2012 reports of COA and the DBM, Estrada gave P63 million of his PDAF to the Napoles NGOs in four local government units (LGUs), Marcos, P40 million to four towns, Legarda, P25 million to three LGUs, Sotto, P20 million to two LGUs, Revilla, P20 million to two towns and Enrile, P10 million to one municipality.

In previous reports by whistle-blowers to the National Bureau of Investigation that the Inquirer published in July and the COA special audit from 2007 to 2009, only senators in the opposition were mentioned, giving rise to criticism that they were the object of an administration “demolition” job. The accusers said the schemes generated kickbacks of up to 70 percent.--Source: Inquirer.net

FDA warns against fake toxic lipsticks

Women in the Philippines are being warned against using unlicensed Chinese-made lipsticks and other big brand imitation products, over fears they may contain high levels of lead.

FDA warns against fake toxic lipsticks
The Food and Drug Administration has issued an advisory, after it was found many products were being sold widely on the streets without its approval.

"These products may contain high levels of heavy metals, especially lead," it said.

The advisory warned that lead has been linked to causing high blood pressure, joint pain and poor memory in adults, while children are even more at risk.

"The children are particularly at risk from neurotoxic effects of lead, which affect their brain development and cognition," it said.

The lipsticks carry the labels Baolishi, Miss Beauty, Shijing, Ling Mei and Heng Fang.

The FDA did not reveal how the products came to the Philippines but it has previously acknowledged smuggling remains a problem because of corruption within the customs bureau.

This is not the first time the FDA has banned Chinese products from being sold in the Philippines.

In 2010, it banned at least nine Chinese brands of skin creams and whiteners that were found to contain high levels of mercury.--Source: ABC.net

SEE: The new Apple iPhone 5s and the entry level iPhone 5c

Apple on Tuesday unveiled two new iPhones: the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5C. "iPhone 5 was instantly the most-loved iPhone ever, and it had the most successful first year of any iPhone we've ever done," Apple CEO Tim Cook said.

"The business has become so large that this year we're going to replace the iPhone 5...and we're gonna replace it with not one, but two new designs." These include the powerful iPhone 5s and the colorful iPhone 5c.

The iPhone 5s

"The most forward-thinking phone we've ever created," Apple's Phil Schiller said of the new iPhone 5s (shown at top). The iPhone 5s comes in three metal finishes: silver, gold, and something called "space gray." It's made of high-grade aluminum, with chamfered edges.

Schiller said that the iPhone 5s offers great, unparalleled performance, calling it a "huge leap forward." The phone uses the 64-bit A7 system-on-a-chip processor from Apple, and it's the first and only smartphone to use a 64-bit processor.

Apple says the A7 chip uses desktop-class architecture, with a modern instruction set and over a billion transistors—and it's the same size as the A6.

iOS 7 already supports a native 64-bit kernel, Schiller said. All the built-in apps from Apple already have been reengineered for 64-bit, and it will be easy for third-party developers to compile their apps for the iPhone 5s as well.

"The benefits are huge," Schiller said. The A7 is up to twice as fast at CPU and graphics tasks, he said. The iPhone 5s offers 40 times the performance of the original iPhone—with half of that improvement just coming since the iPhone 5.

The iPhone 5s and Touch ID

The iPhone 5s also comes with a nifty new security feature: A fingerprint scanner built right into the Home button. That sensor can read fingerprints with incredible detail, and even supports multiple fingers. Support for that scanner in iOS 7 means you may never need to tap in your passcode again.

"Unfortunately, some people find that's too cumbersome, so they don't set it up," Schiller said. And even if you set up a passcode, you need to enter it many times per day.

Touch ID uses your fingerprint to gain access to your phone. It does this by reading the fingerprint at an incredibly detailed level using the Touch ID sensor. Touch ID scans sub-epidermal skin layers with 360 degrees of readability—meaning you can hold your finger in any orientation.

The sensor lives beneath the Home button on the iPhone 5s. That button is still tactile, but includes a stainless steel detection ring and the Touch ID sensor, with a laser-cut sapphire crystal on top. Touch ID is built deep into iOS 7, Schiller said.

You can simply touch the Home button to unlock your iPhone. You can use the Touch ID to authenticate anywhere you'd otherwise need to provide your Apple ID password, too.

Touch ID also supports multiple fingerprints. So, you can unlock your iPhone with multiple fingers, or theoretically let a family member add their fingerprint to unlock your device, too.

The iPhone 5s camera

Schiller said that the camera on the iPhone 5s is dramatically improved over its predecessor. He cited what he called "huge advancements": There's a new five-element, Apple-designed lens, with a larger 2.2 aperture, and a 15 percent larger active sensor area.

The pixels on the sensor are 1.5 microns, Schiller said, and he said that bigger pixels lead to better pictures. The camera also includes a new True Tone Flash.

The iPhone 5s camera also adds automatic image stabilization. It combines multiple photos taken simultaneously in real-time to stabilize and sharpen images. And the camera includes burst mode, too.

There's a new video camera option, too: a Slo-Mo camera, which shoots 120 frames per second in high definition.

Other features

There's another completely new part in the iPhone 5s called M7: a motion co-processor. It continually measures motion data from the accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass, without waking the A7, which Schiller said would enable new fitness accessories and apps.

In conjunction with a new CoreMotion API, Schiller said that developers could create apps to measure and track fitness in ways that weren't possible before.

The iPhone 5s's battery life is equal to or greater than the iPhone 5's, Schiller said, with 10 hours of 3G talk time or LTE browsing.

Pricing and availability for the iPhone 5s

The iPhone 5s is available in 16GB for $199, 32GB for $299, or 64GB for $399. Apple is also offering six leather cases for the iPhone 5s at $39 each.

The iPhone 5s will be available in the U.S., Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the U.K.

Orders for the iPhone 5s start on September 20, and they will be available from the Apple Online Store, Apple’s retail stores, and through AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, as well as select Apple authorized resellers.

The unlocked prices for the 5s are $649 for the 16GB model, $749 for the 32GB model, and $849 for the 64GB model.

Though the iPhone 5 will be retired, Apple will continue to offer the iPhone 4S in a free 8GB model.

The iPhone 5c

"The iPhone 5c is made with all the incredible technology customers have loved with the iPhone 5," Apple senior vice president Phil Schiller said.

"It's more fun and more colorful than any iPhone we've had yet."

The iPhone 5c is available in a variety of colors: blue, green, white, pink, and yellow. The fronts of the phones are black, while all the rest of the body uses the new color, including the buttons and switches.

When you turn on the iPhone 5c, the default wallpaper is color-matched to the phone's body. There's also a new line of custom cases, made of a soft-feel silicon rubber with microfiber internals, and cutout patterns of circles on the bottom two-thirds of the case. "You get this amazing combination of color between the iPhone 5C and its case."

The iPhone 5c is made of a hard-coated polycarbonate, with a steel-reinforced structure for incredible rigidity—doing double duty as an antenna. The phone uses the iPhone 5's 4-inch Retina display. It's powered by an A6 chip, and offers higher-capacity battery performance, with a larger battery than the original iPhone 5. And it offers an 8MP iSight camera.

On the front, the iPhone 5c sports a new FaceTime HD camera that Schiller said is improved from prior iterations. And the phone supports more LTE bands than any other smartphone in the world, Schiller said.

Pricing and availability for the iPhone 5c

The iPhone 5c costs $99 for the 16GB model, or $199 for the 32GB model, with a two-year contract. The cases are also available in the same six colors; they're available for $29 each. The unlocked prices for this model are $549 for the 16GB version and $649 for the 32GB version.--Source: Macworld
