VIDEO: First robot astronaut Kirobo chats with human in historic space conversation

"One small step for me, one giant leap for robot-kind," the first ever speaking robot astronaut Kirobo said when it made its historic first conversation with a human astronaut aboard the International Space Station early this month.

In a milestone for robot-human relations, the talking Japanese robot Kirobo had its first conversation with an astronaut in space.

In an article from NBC News Science, it said Astronaut Koichi Wakata of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) made small talk with Kirobo aboard the International Space Station on Dec. 6. In newly released video footage of their historic chat, Wakata asks the robot how it got to the orbiting outpost.

Scientists will be recording and collecting data on Wakata's conversations with Kirobo over the next several months to study how humans and robots might live alongside each other during long space journeys in the future.

The following is a translated excerpt of the Dec. 6 conversation from one of project's partners, PR company Dentsu Inc.:

Wakata: How did you get out here into space, Kirobo?
Kirobo: On a Kounotori from Tanegashima.
Wakata: Oh, so you flew all the way into space on a bird? (In Japanese, "kounotori" means "white stork." The transfer vehicle that brought Kirobo to the space station in August was named Kounotori 4.)
Kirobo: It wasn't a bird; it was the Kounotori rocket.
Wakata: It's incredible that you came here all by yourself.
Kirobo: Well, I'm a robot!

Kirobo arrived at the orbiting lab on Aug. 9 as part of an unmanned Japanese cargo delivery that launched from the Tanegashima Space Center in southern Japan. Shortly after, the robot uttered its first words in space.

"On Aug. 21, 2013, a robot took one small step toward a brighter future for all," Kirobo said in a video message, riffing on Apollo astronaut Neil Armstrong's famous "one small step" line.

Since it is programmed to speak only Japanese, Kirobo had to wait until Wakata arrived at the space station on Nov. 7 to chat face-to-face with a human. Wakata, 50, is poised to become Japan's first commander of the space station in March, when he takes charge of Expedition 39. He is scheduled to come back to Earth in May 2014. Kirobo, meanwhile, isn't set to return until December 2014, according to Dentsu.

Kirobo is just 13 inches (34 centimeters) tall, and its name mixes the words "robot" and Kibo, which is Japanese for "hope." (Kibo is also the name of the Japanese research module on the space station.) Officially named the Kibo Robot Project, the mission was developed by the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Tokyo, the Toyota Motor Corp., Robo Garage and Dentsu, with assistance from JAXA.

Before ending the conversation, Wakata asked one of his final questions:

Wakata: What is your dream, Kirobo?
Kirobo: I want to help create a world where humans and robots can co-exist.

VIDEO: World's first LEGO life-size car hits the road

An ambitious duo has snapped together 500,000 pieces of Lego blocks to create the world’s first air-powered Lego roadster.

The open-aired Lego mobile, designed by 20 year-old Raul Oaida of Romania, is somehow magically powered by a top secret amalgam of Lego pieces and pump parts. With a mechanical design arrangement that would make even the most hardcore of automotive engineers drool, the Lego-mobile is driven by four orbital engines, each holding 256 pistons, or 64 per Lego engine block.

According to Gizmag, it tried to get more information on the drivetrain, horsepower, and torque ratings, Melbourne entrepreneur/fund raising partner, Steve Sammartino was unwilling to divulge design secrets or specs at this time.

The car is capable of hitting a top speed of 30 km/h (18 mph). The team is quick to point out the car's speed was purposely kept low so as to avoid tiny Lego explosions from within one of the 256 Lego cylinders.

Not everything on the vehicle is Lego. According to the team, load bearing components, including wheels, tires and steering control mechanisms are of a metallic nature, as are the air pressure gauges on the console. However, items like doors, the steering wheel, seats and even the low profile transparent windscreen all appear to be 100 percent Lego-based.

Funded by over forty investors via a crowd-funding exercise, the Lego mobile is but the first in a series of bigger projects for the duo of Sammartino and Oaida.

No more wearing of caps inside malls - NCRPO

Police authorities have banned the wearing of caps inside malls as a preventive measure against robberies, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) said yesterday.

When you go shopping next time at your favorite mall, don't be surprised if the security guard on duty will tell you to remove your cap.

Signboards against the wearing of caps will be displayed at the entrances while security guards will strictly enforce the ban in a polite manner.

In a media interview, NCRPO chief Carmelo Valmoria said, “From now on, the wearing of caps would be banned in malls. Those wearing it would be advised to take it off and place or keep them inside their bags or in their pockets,”

The new policy was arrived at from a series of meetings with mall operators and security managers in Metro Manila, Valmoria said emphasizing that the move is to enhance security in malls and prevent robberies like the one committed at SM North EDSA two Sundays ago.

It was observed that robbers wear caps to prevent closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras from capturing their images.

Just recently, armed robbers attacked SM North Edsa where a jewelry store inside the department store was robbed of about P5 million worth of jewelry, and about P50,000 worth of cash in another robbery inside an establishment in SM Mall of Asia.

In January 2013, robbers also attacked the jewelry store inside SM Megamall.

Both robberies involved armed men using hammers to smash the showcase displays of the stores. The CCTV cameras got clear shots of the robbers – with caps shielding their faces, Valmoria said.

Previously, Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas II has already banned the purchase of hammers in malls. Customers may be allowed to buy hammers but they can only claim them at designated claim corners near the malls’ exits.

In a voice-over during her episode on "Kris TV" on Tuesday, Aquino explained the reason behind her decision not to show some parts of her house.

Saying that she wants to "avoid negativity" this Christmas, the TV host shared that she asked her production manager to re-edit Tuesday's episode to remove some parts of her home tour.

"Maging ang comment ng user na ito [sa Instagram] ang kanyang reaction sa aking home tour:

"showing off what you have is not very humbling, especially when the rest of the country is struggling to even put food on their plate and people affected by typhoon lost everything they have. Just saying."

"I replied to them (Instagram followers) and said, 'para walang issue, just called Jasmin, production manager of 'Kris TV,' re-edit kami ng episode tomorrow... No more second or third floor," she added.

Aquino also apologized to her fans for the sudden change in the "Kris TV" episode and thanked those who defended her from her critics.

"Thanks for defending me but I really don't want to have any nega before Christmas. Nagmamagandang-loob lang ako to share [my home] pero na-misinterpret pa, so wala na lang para walang gulo," she said.

She went on to explain why she initially wanted to show her home to her viewers on "Kris TV."

"I shared this exclusive home tour with all of you because your support and patronage of my shows, movies and products I endorse helped us build our home," she said.

Aquino began showing her new home on "Kris TV" on Monday.

"Kris TV" has also aired episodes showing the homes of other celebrities such as Bea Alonzo, Ai Ai delas Alas, Kim Chiu, Boy Abunda and many others.--Source: ABS-CBN News

AK-47 inventor, Mikhail Kalashnikov, dies at 94

Mikhail Kalashnikov, the creator of AK-47 assault rifles died Monday at the age of 94.

General Mikhail Kalashnikov holds his iconic invention, the AK-47.

Lt Gen Mikhail T Kalashnikov, the arms designer credited by the Soviet Union with creating the AK-47, the first in a series of rifles and machine guns that would indelibly associate his name with modern war and become the most abundant firearms ever made, died in Izhevsk, the capital of the Udmurtia republic, where he lived.

Viktor Chulkov, a spokesman for the republic's president, confirmed the death, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.

Born a peasant on the southern Siberian steppe, Kalashnikov had little formal education and claimed to be a self-taught tinkerer who combined innate mechanical skills with the study of weapons to conceive of a rifle that achieved battlefield ubiquity.

His role in the rifle's creation, and the attention showered on him by the Kremlin's propaganda machine, carried him from conscription in the Red Army to senior positions in the Soviet arms-manufacturing bureaucracy and ultimately to six terms on the Supreme Soviet.

Tens of millions of Kalashnikov rifles have been  manufactured. Their short barrels, steep front-sight posts and curved magazines made them a marker of conflict that has endured for decades. The weapons also became both Soviet and revolutionary symbols and widespread instruments of terrorism, child-soldiering and crime.

The general, who sometimes lamented the weapons' unchecked distribution but took pride in having invented them and their reputation for reliability, weathered the collapse of the Soviet Union to assume a public role as a folk hero and unequivocal Russian patriot.

A Soviet nostalgist, he also served as the unofficial arms ambassador of the revived Russian state. He used public appearances to try to cast the AK-47's checkered legacy in a positive way and to complain that knockoffs were being manufactured illegally by former Soviet allies and cutting into Russian sales.

The weapon, he said, was designed to protect his motherland, not to be used by terrorists or thugs.

"This is a weapon of defense," he said. "It is not a weapon for offense."--Source: NDTV

Mayweather sends 'funny' Christmas card to Pacquiao

Floyd Mayweather Jr. just sent a Christmas card to Manny Pacquiao and the rest of the world via his Twitter account, giving sports fans a time to laugh this holiday season.

"Christmas card to the world," the tweet said.

Four photos show Mayweather holding up a wad of cash, telling Manny Pacquiao, “I’ll pay you $40 million to fight,” followed by Pacquiao replying, “No way. You’re crazy. 50/50 or nothing,” with another photo showing the Filipino star flattened face first on the canvas after his December 2012 loss to Juan Manuel Marquez.

Lastly, a photo showing Pacquiao praying has the caption, “Dear God, please have Floyd call me again.”

Although the boxing world would still love a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight despite a dated shelf life, Mayweather is believed to be moving toward a January announcement of England’s Amir Khan as his May 3 opponent at MGM Grand.

Pacquiao’s manager, Michael Koncz, met with the fighter’s promoter, Bob Arum, this week and
is returning to the Philippines Christmas Day to discuss the options before them, which are likely confined at this point to either unbeaten Cathedral City fighter Timothy Bradley or Pacquiao’s tough former sparring partner Ruslan Provodnikov.

Koncz said he doesn’t believe there’ll be a fifth Pacquiao-Marquez fight.

“Marquez will never fight us again,” Koncz said. “Why would he? He has bragging rights and all the money he wants.”

Koncz said Mayweather wasn’t mentioned as a possible Pacquiao opponent in the meeting with Arum.
Mayweather hasn’t expressed interest in fighting Pacquiao while he’s promoted by Mayweather’s former promoter Arum.

Koncz said he saw Mayweather’s tweet.

“At least Floyd’s thinking of us in some way,” Koncz said. “I smiled when I saw it last
night and I’ll show it to Manny when I get to the Philippines.”--Source: The Los Angeles Times

The TOP 10 most-used tablets in 2013

The tablet race is still raging as top competitors Apple, Samsung and Google go on head-to-head collision on who's the best when it comes to the tablet category this year. Here's the top 10 most-used tablets in 2013.

Analyzing tablet data as it comes out on a quarterly basis can sometimes paint an opaque picture as to who's gaining and who's losing in the space -- not to mention that much of the time reports calculate shipment market share instead of actual usage or sales of devices. So to clear up the current tablet marketplace standings, let's take a look at actual tablet usage for 10 months of 2013 to see which companies are coming out ahead.

The iPad is still dominating usage stats

Analytics company Mixpanel used millions of tablet record data between February and December of this year to calculate that Apple holds the lead over Samsung and Google in the tablet space. You'll see from the graph below that Apple grabs five out of the top six tablet usage spots, and even the three-year-old first-generation iPad made it to the top six spot.

US Tablet usage 2013
Data source: MixPanel

It's also important to mention that the Samsung Galaxy Note usage numbers include the Note, Note II, Note 3, Note 8.0, and Note 10.1. So while Samsung managed to take the No. 2 spot in usage, it did so using five versions of its tablet.

Samsung and Google are obviously huge competitors to Apple, and Samsung has made lots of inroads in the tablet industry, but the graph shows that the two companies still have a long way to go in tackling Apple's dominance. This matches up with Mixpanel data released in October that showed iOS made up 67% of tablet usage, while Android took just 33%.

Aside from Apple's dominant usage numbers this year, the recent release of the iPad Air should keep Apple ahead of Samsung and Google going into 2014. Since its launch, users have adopted the iPad Air at a faster rate than they did the iPad 4. Carriers have experienced iPad Air success as well. AT&T saw its iPad activations triple with the iPad Air compared to the previous iPad's launch weekend.

Though usage statistics and adoption rates aren't equal to sales, it's important for investors to measure how quickly new products like the Air are being adopted and how iPad models stack up to their competitors' usage. Apple not only makes a significant amount of revenue from its tablets -- the Air has estimated profit margins between 45% and 61% -- but also from app purchases. The higher the usage numbers, the more likely iPad users are to be purchasing apps and services that Apple can earn revenue from. One thing Apple investors should continue to watch going into 2014 is for reports of how the iPad Air was received over the holiday season. Apple traditionally has solid fourth-quarter iPad sales, and hopefully this year won't disappoint.--Review by Chris Nieger/Motley Fool

The folks at Google have a lot to cheer since their newly acquired company, Schaft, Inc. of Japan, won the robotics challenge trials sponsored by the military’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The trials were held this weekend at Florida’s Homestead Miami Speedway.

Sixteen teams with robots competed for a place in next year’s final, when DARPA will award a $2 million grand prize to the winner. The robots were designed to complete eight challenging tasks–the kind that would be required as part of response efforts to natural or man-made disasters, such as walking over uneven terrain, clearing away debris, and climbing a ladder.

The winning Schaft robot, a 209-pound humanoid just under five feet tall, scored 27 out of a possible 32 points, beating Boston Dynamics’ Atlas robot by seven points. Carnegie Mellon University’s CMU Highly Intelligent Mobile Platform (CHIMP) came in third with 18 points. The top eight performers will get a chance to compete in the 2014 finals.

Adam Jacoff, a robotics research engineer with the National Institutes of Standards and Technology, told Live Science that the DARPA Robotics Challenge Trials is “one of the biggest robotics evaluations on Earth and dwarf many military robot tests, both in scale of ambition and the actual effort involved.”--Source: The State Column

How much will you pay Santa Claus as brand endorser

If you want to get Santa Claus as your brand endorser, you'd have to pay him $1.6 trillion, according to a brand evaluation firm.

Brand Finance CEO David Haigh says that about 800 billion dollars worth of retail have been incurred this season alone. Transport costs reached about 500 billion dollars, and about 200 billion of accommodation and hotels were spent -- all attributable to the Christmas holiday, which is led by Santa Claus.

Brand Santa is worth $1.6 trillion. In contrast, Apple, the most valuable brand of 2013 was valued by Brand Finance earlier this year at $87.3 billion.

Using an analysis similar to its corporate brand valuations, Brand Finance took in the economic areas where Santa makes his mark such as travel, retail and accommodation, then looked at the festive period uplift in revenues and applied a royalty rate to arrive at the final figure.

Santa Claus has been integral to the year-end festive season for over a thousand years and has unrivalled brand equity. Santa would earlier appear in green, red or gold robes.

However, a shrewd portrayal by Coca-Cola resulted in a more consistent visual identity, dressed in red. Santa now enjoys unrivalled recognition and is an extremely lucrative ambassador for hundreds of brands.

Brand Finance CEO David Haigh says, "Santa is the gold (or should that be red & white) standard when it comes to branding...recognized the world over..."

David Haigh says, "There is no doubt that Santa Claus is the world's most valuable celebrity brand and it is no wonder that brands form Coke to Volkswagen to KFC want his endorsement."

To value the 'Santa' brand, Brand Finance used a methodology used to value corporate brands. This is called 'royalty relief' and is based on a hypothetical licensing charge (on revenues) for the use of the brand. The approach assumes a hypothetical scenario in which the business does not actually own its brand but instead is required to license it from a third party.

By determining the royalty fees the businesses affected would theoretically be required to pay, the agency can estimate the proportion of future cash flows that are attributable to the brand - the present value of the post-tax royalties are held to represent the value of the brand today.

A royalty rate, based on Brand Finance's internal database and sector-specific studies, was applied to the forecast GDP (2013 to 2017) for each sector to determine the royalty stream of earnings globally. While accommodation had a rate of 2 per cent, retail had 4 per cent and transportation 1 per cent.

Applying the royalty rates to the forecast revenue of the 'Christmas-related' GDP for the three sectors over the five year-period and discounting the post-tax royalty stream (at a discount rate of 4 per cent), results in a value for the Santa brand for each sector. The sum of the three values is $1.6 trillion.--Source: Business Standard.

McDonald's website tells employees not to eat at McDonald's

McDonald’s has taken down its McResources website after multiple public embarrassments, the most recent of which told employees to stay away from the exact type of unhealthy fast food McDonald’s is famous for globalizing, according to news site CNBC.

CNBC first reported the self-sabotaging advice yesterday, noting that even the graphic for the “unhealthy choice” on the tips page looked like a McDonald’s meal:

Yesterday, the massive fast food chain defended the site, saying the advice—which was mined from third-party sources—had been taken “entirely out of context.” Today, spokesperson Lisa McComb said McDonald’s pulled the site for creating “unwarranted scrutiny”:

“We have offered the McResource program to help our valued McDonald’s employees with work and life guidance created by independent third party experts. A combination of factors has led us to re-evaluate, and we’ve directed the vendor to take down the website. Between links to irrelevant or outdated information, along with outside groups taking elements out of context, this created unwarranted scrutiny and inappropriate commentary.”

“We’ll continue to provide service to them through an internal telephone help line, which is how the majority of employees access the McResource services,” McComb added.--Source: Mediaite

'Super Yolanda' firecracker gets first victim, boy loses hand

A new firecracker, called the "Super Yolanda", claimed its first victim Friday morning, blowing a boy's right hand in the province of Ilo-ilo, according to the Department of Health (DOH).

The incident is one of the 140 people injured due to firecrackers-related incidents, 134 of which sustained wounds from firecrackers, 5 hit by stray bullets, and one who accidentally swallowed a firecracker, DOH Assistant Secretary Eric Tayag said in his official Twitter account,

Tayag said this figure is slightly lower compared to the 146 injuries reported in the same period last year.

He said of the 134 firecracker injuries, 82 were due to the banned firecracker Piccolo.

Tayag said in Iloilo, a five-year-old boy lost his right hand index finger after using a "camara" or small dynamite.

A 14-year-old boy in Cebu City, meanwhile, had his right hand amputated after using illegal firecracker "Super Yolanda."

Last year, the DOH recorded a total of 931 firecracker-related injuries: 904 were due to fireworks, 25 from stray bullet and 2 from firecracker ingestion.

Most injuries were caused by piccolo (236), followed by unknown firecrackers (143), kwitis (128), five star (55) and pla-pla (42).

The firecracker was named after typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan), the strongest typhoon in history which struck the Visayas region in the Philippines in November leaving more than 6,000 dead and almost 2,000 missing.--Source: DOH/ABS-CBN News
