Recently, the three Filipinos underwent rigorous astronaut training at the AXE Apollo Space Camp in Orlando, Florida.

Santos, an IT engineer underwent air space combat training while Datuin went through high G-force training, a centrifuge machine that would reproduce the pressure that human body experiences when a space aircraft blasts off into space.

For his part, Roque underwent both air combat training and assault course.

The 22 lucky winners will receive tickets to fly into space aboard X-COR Aerospace Lynx Aircraft in 2014.

Axe, in a statement, said their space expedition corporation's reusable shuttle is expected to start flying customers to space in 2015 at a price of $95,000 per ticket.

McDonald's posted another video on YouTube showing Jessy strutting on a red carpet inside the restaurant with a marching band.

She then approaches the surprised male customers carrying a burger meal.

In the video, the "random guys" showed mixed emotions of shock and fun, with one male customer blurting out, "Oh my God!"

The video came after the same prank was done with basketball star Jeric Teng, having his brother Jeron as accomplice.

The two prank videos were pulled out straight from a popular TV ad of McDonald's McSpicy in the Philippines, where Jessy sits with an unsuspecting customer to have lunch.

Jessy Mendiola stars in the lead role in ABS-CBN's "Maria Mercedes" teleserye.

This Microsoft Smart Bra will prevent you from overeating

Microsoft has developed a wearable device in a ladies' bra synced to a smartphone app which will prevent them from overeating due to stress.

This Microsoft Smart Bra will prevent you from overeating

The device, detailed in a research paper titled "Food and Mood: Just-in-Time Support
for Emotional Eating," features multiple sensors to detect when women might want to eat because of stress.

The Microsoft research gadget monitors heart rate, respiration, skin conductance and movement. The device sends the data to a synced smartphone app that attempts to stop users from eating when they feel stress.

"It’s mostly women who are emotional overeaters, and it turns out that a bra is perfect for measuring EKG (electrocardiogram)," Mary Czerwinski, a research manager at Microsoft, told Discovery News.

The bra works so well because the monitors are located near a person's heart. But one problem with the bra is its battery lasts only about four hours, making it impractical for everyday use. Microsoft has not announced plans for the device to go on sale.

As for men, Microsoft also tried a version of the device using underwear, but, predictably, it didn't work as well.

"It was too far away (from the heart)," Czerwinski said.--Source: Los Angeles Times

The new Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga for young corporates

$
0
0

ThinkPad has come to mean work laptop, and with the new ThinkPad Yoga it also means work tablet. Lenovo built a good laptop and put a swivel screen on it that turns it into a reasonable tablet for work. It does that with a flare, as the keys recede into the unit in tablet mode.

Lenovo ThinkPad

Hardware specifications as reviewed:

  • Processor: Intel Core i5 1.6 GHz (Haswell)
  • Memory: 4 GB
  • Display: 12.5-inch IPS, 1920x1080, touch screen, pen support
  • OS: Windows 8.1 Pro
  • Storage: 128GB SSD
  • Camera: 720p webcam
  • Keyboard: Lift ‘n’ Lock in tablet mode, backlit
  • Ports: 2-USB 3.0, audio combo, miniHDMI, VGA, 4-in-1 SD/MMC card reader, proprietary dock connector
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0
  • Battery: Up to 8 hours
  • Dimensions: 12.46" x 8.70" x 0.74"
  • Weight: 3.52 lbs
  • Price as configured: $1,299 (PHP71,000 in the Philippines-EJ)

Flexible laptop
Lenovo jumped on board with the flexibility of Windows 8 early on with its unique Yoga laptops. These have a screen that can be rotated all the way back until the keyboard is facing out under the flat display. This turns the Yoga laptop into a tablet, taking full advantage of Windows 8.

The screen can be stopped midway in the rotation, allowing both a stand mode (screen facing backwards, keyboard down) and a tent mode (unit forming an upside-down “V” for viewing). The four modes — laptop, tent, stand, and tablet — are the source of the Yoga name brand.

The ThinkPad Yoga is a true business-class laptop, and the first ThinkPad from Lenovo carrying the Yoga brand. It is well-constructed and should stand up to the rigors of the mobile professional.

The 12.5-inch screen is bright (400 nits) and has 10-finger touch control. In addition to standard touch, it also supports pen control via the included stylus. The stylus is stored in a convenient silo in the unit when not being used, a nice touch.

No review of a ThinkPad would be complete without addressing the keyboard. As a fan of ThinkPad keyboards, I can attest that the one on the Yoga is superb. It has chiclet keys, but similar to those of the ThinkPad X240 (ZDNet review here). The keys on the Yoga have key travel that feels like traditional keys. The keyboard is comfortable, feels just right, and supports rapid touch typing handily.

As similar as the Yoga keyboard is to that of the X240, it has one feature that is unique that comes into play when pressed into tablet duty. That will be explained in the tablet section.

Speaking of the ThinkPad X240, the Yoga has a similar trackpad, too. It is not overly large but operates smoothly and is a buttonless model. Pressing down on the trackpad gives a distinct mouse click. It is a good trackpad for a Windows laptop.

Fans of the red ThinkPad Trackstick will not be disappointed as the Yoga has one in the middle of the keyboard. In lieu of the standard three mouse buttons, the top edge of the trackpad serves as the buttons which are clearly marked.

The Core i5 in the review unit has great performance and handles even a heavy system load with ease. Apps load quickly and run very fast. The graphics scroll smoothly and without lag in most Windows Metro apps.

Lenovo quotes a battery life of up to 8 hours and that seems accurate in testing. The Haswell processor is doing its job in extending the battery life while not requiring a huge heavy power brick inside the ThinkPad Yoga. The battery is sealed and Lenovo did not use the two battery Power Bridge technology as it did on the X240.

Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga (rotation diagram)

Reasonable tablet
The ThinkPad Yoga can step in and perform as a tablet when desired and it’s a pretty decent one. I’m not a big fan of Windows tablets that are always attached to the keyboard due to the extra weight. The Yoga is definitely heavy at 3.5 pounds when used as a tablet but resting on a conference table, that disadvantage is mitigated somewhat.

The 12.5-inch screen works well as a tablet and touch operation is very nicely implemented. It works well in both portrait and landscape orientations.

As well as touch operation works on the Yoga, pen support works just as nicely. The included stylus can be slipped out of the silo on the device and in use in seconds. Writing on the screen in either Windows Journal or OneNote is as smooth as can be and feels natural. Fans of inking know how important that is, and not all tablets have pen support this nice.

Like other Yoga tablets, the ThinkPad Yoga has the keyboard exposed on the bottom of the display when in tablet mode. This is not optimal and it can be hard to get used to feeling the keys when using the tablet. To minimize this, Lenovo has applied some unique engineering to the Yoga.

As the screen is pushed back into tablet mode, the keys recede into the device. They are level with the “back” when the display is fully rotated into tablet mode. It’s not the perfect solution but far preferable to other tablets that leave the keys fully extended.

Conclusion
The ThinkPad Yoga is a great work laptop that can be pressed into tablet duty when desired. Its heavy-duty ThinkPad construction will stand up to the rigors of a road warrior. The battery life is reasonable and the beautiful screen works well in both laptop and tablet modes.

The laptop is available from Lenovo for $1,299 (PHP71,000 in the Philippines - EJ) as reviewed, and as is typical for Lenovo products is configurable to meet the exact needs of the buyer.

Pros:

  • Not expensive for a ThinkPad
  • Great keyboard
  • Good performance
  • Battery life is acceptable

Cons:

  • Heavy in tablet mode

Zombie drug 'Krokodil' spreading globally?

News of an addictive Russian drug called "krokodil" -- described as the ultimate "zombie drug" currently in use by drug dependents worldwide -- has been making the rounds in the social media giving out warnings of a drug-induced zombie outbreak.

A scene from "The Walking Dead". Social media news tell of warning of a drug-induced zombie outbreak.
A scene from "The Walking Dead": Social media news tell of warning of a drug-induced zombie outbreak.

But experts say krokodil is an addictive drug like morphine and heroine, not a chemical substance that would make a zombie out of a person.

The drug, however, causes flesh to darken, rot and decay giving the user a zombie-like "scaly" body with fresh wounds all over his body.

A news article in UK's IBTimes said the drug never left Russia and "is not spreading throughout the US, Canada, UK," and the rest of the world.

In September, reports emerged that two cases of krokodil users had been found in Phoenix, Arizona, at a drug treatment center. Since then, reports of the drug emerging in several other states have surfaced, with suspected cases found in Illinois, Ohio and Missouri.

However the Drugs Enforcement Agency has categorically denied the drug has entered the US, with no laboratory confirmed cases found.

Rusty Payne, spokesman for the DEA, told IBTimes UK that while they are investigating, there is nothing to suggest the presence of krokodil.

"DEA is aware of and tracking the nation-wide reports of alleged abuse of the controlled substance desomorphine that is found in the drug krokodil, a homemade substitute for heroin invented and used in rural Russia, Georgia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan.

"DEA is investigating the matter by acquiring samples alleged to contain desomorphine, interviewing drug abusers, and monitoring intelligence reports. To date, none of our forensic laboratories has analysed an exhibit found to contain desomorphine.  A sample sent to our Chicago forensic laboratory that was suspected to be krokodil was actually heroin."

The drug causes flesh to darken, rot and decay giving the user a zombie-like "scaly"
body with fresh wounds all over his body.

A similar picture has been painted in Canada, where two suspected cases were found in Niagara. Marc Paris, executive director of the Partnership for a Drug Free Canada, said: "We checked our sources and it seems that the reported potential cases in Niagara have been determined to be infections at heroin injection sites - flesh eating disease was mentioned in one conversation with the RCMP. So far there have been no confirmed cases of Krokodil in Canada.

"Obviously we are hoping it will stay that way. It seems Canadian addicts aren't facing the lack of access to heroin that the Russians were which started this whole horrific thing ... Both Toronto city police and the RCMP are staying vigilant."

Krokodil emerged in Russia about 10 years ago. It is cheaper than heroin as it is made from household items including codeine, gasoline and lighter fluid.

Last year, a study published in the Journal of Addictive Diseases looked at the emergence of krokodil and its potential spread to Germany. The authors noted that while there had been mass reporting on the drug, there was little to no scientific evidence to show its spread.

Explaining its origin, the authors said that the base drug is desomorphine, which is an opioid analogon first synthesized and patented in 1932 in the US. They said it is more addictive than morphine and was eventually withdrawn from the market.--Source: International Business Times

The Diplahan "Lechon Maalat" is now in Manila

$

A new kind of our native "lechon" is now up and running in Metro Manila -- the Diplahan Lechon more popularly known as "Lechon Maalat".

The Diplahan "Lechon Maalat" is now in Manila

Originally from Zamboanga Sibugay, the rare roasted pig has already caught the taste of food lovers in Manila.

Diplahan Lechon is named after the town where the “lechon maalat” was revolutionized. The salty taste – reminiscent of lechon kawali – and its golden brown color are what distinguish them from their more famous cousins in Cebu.

In an interview with ABS-CBN, businessman Jotle Viray, who brought this lechon in Manila, would not say if it is better than Cebu lechon. “I don’t want to say it’s the best, but it was worth my time,” he said diplomatically.

Viray, who is also the owner of G&G International Unlimited, Inc., was on one of his business trips to Zamboanga Sibugay when he met Ronnie and Becky Lumindas, the husband-and-wife who perfected the “lechon maalat.”

The couple are actually the only ones who know the secret behind this rare lechon. They were able to teach another individual how to do the cracked look and taste of the lechon, but theirs has already garnered the loyalty of Diplahan and nearby towns and provinces.

It took a long time for Viray and his partners, including wife Luisa, to persuade the couple into teaching them the secret of roasting the Diplahan lechon. It was the promise of “giving back” that finally pushed the Lumindas to go to Manila and lend their expertise.

A portion of the proceeds for each lechon sold will be collected and given to the local government of Zamboanga Sibugay.

“Sayang ang potential,” Viray said.

Finally, the Lumindas were brought to Manila months back to teach the employees the technique.

“Diplahan lechon gets its blistered skin through the intermittent stirring of the coals, but the way we clean the pig and flavor it is the secret,” Viray said.

So secret that only two can enter the kitchen at their commissary in Antipolo today.

“When we [first] tried it in Manila, the people did not like the saltiness that much,” Viray said, adding that they had to temper the saltiness in order to make it more palatable to those in Manila who have been accustomed to the lechon in Cebu.

In order to bring the business a notch higher still, Diplahan lechon only uses organically grown pigs sourced from Marikina. Organically fed pigs are more expensive, but provides the roasting another layer of taste.

Finally, the lechon was cooking.

A spicy liver sauce will not give the crisp skin the justice it deserves. The Virays were able to concoct a special kind of vinegar that further enhances the taste of the lechong maalat.

However, the crispy skin and juicy meat are best eaten sans the special sauce. With rice on the side, the tagline “magkakasala ka sa sarap” does really give a warning of sorts.

Diplahan Lechon has a booking office in Tomas Morato and can also be contacted via their social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

It is recommended that orders be given at least 24 hours before delivery. Because of the painstaking techniques, the cooking takes about six hours.

A medium pig is sold at P7,500, while the large one is P8,500. Diplahan lechon also sells smaller sizes, but these will depend on the availability of the organic pigs.--Source: ABS-CBN News

Bieber's plane landed at around 7:10am at a private hangar near the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, confirmed by the local immigration's arrival records.

His visit to the Philippines is the latest in a series of relief effors for calamity-hit areas as part of the #GiveBackPhilippines campaign. Earlier, the Canadian pop star raised over $500,000 for Yolanda survivors.

Before his arrival, Bieber was busy promoting on Twitter his "GiveBackPhilippines" campaign which aims to raise $1 million for the victims of typhoon Yolanda.

The promo gave donors the chance to win an exclusive studio hangout with the teen singer in Los Angeles, US.

"Hey guys – it's Justin, In the wake of Typhoon Haiyan, its victims in the Philippines need our help — and they need it now. That's why I've decided to partner with Prizeo to raise vital funds for the relief effort.

"I'm doing something I've never done before: for just a tiny donation to the relief effort, you'll be automatically entered for a chance to hang out with me in the studio early next year and watch me record some new music. I'll fly you and a friend over to join me in LA from wherever you are in the world. It's gonna be awesome. Not only that, but at different donation levels you'll receive guaranteed rewards, as well as more chances to win the grand prize. This is something I've never done before, and I'm so excited to hang out with one of my Beliebers," Bieber added.

In November, Bieber, along with his friend Milk Tyson, spray painted a wall in Los Angeles with the words "Pray 4 Philippines" and image of hands in prayer. He reportedly painted the graffiti to raise funds for Yolanda.

Robin Padilla returns to the big screen as a senator forced into hiding after being framed for a crime in "10,000 Hours," an official entry to this year's 39th Metro Manila Film Festival.

Christmas time is movie time. That's one definition of Christmas in my thingamajigs dictionary. It's the time of the year when you get to watch genuine "all-Filipino" films. This year, I'm rooting for "10,000 Hours."

The story is a mixture of fact and fiction on the life of Philippine senator Panfilo Lacson who, like the character of Robin in the movie, was forced to hide after an arrest warrant was issued against him -- in connection with the November 2000 murders of publicist Salvador Dacer and his driver Emmanuel Corbito.
He re-surfaced on March 26, 2011 after the Court of Appeals ruled that the lifting of his arrest warrant was final.

Why the title "10,000 Hours"? Senator Lacson hid for 14 months (plus a few days) and this time period, according to him, is equivalent to a total of 10,000 hours. In this hard-action movie, Robin is seen on the run in Amsterdam, chased by the good and the bad guys. (Sort of reminds me of "The Bourne Legacy.)

Directed by Joyce Bernal, the film stars Michael de Mesa, who plays Padilla's antagonist, Joem Bascon, Carla Humphries, Mylene Dizon, Markki Stroem, Alden Richards and Bella Padilla. It debuts December 25, 2013 on all theaters.

I'm a movie buff in search of good action films and this year, I choose Robin's "10,000 Hours." Watch the trailer below and tell me your thoughts. Hit me!

IRS hammers Pacquiao with $18 million tax case

Still reeling from the blows thrown by the local Bureau of Internal Revenues (BIR), Manny Pacquiao faces yet another lethal punch from the US Internal Revenue Services (IRS) -- this time slapping him of about $18 million in income taxes, according to celebrity website TMZ.

IRS hammers Pacquiao with $18 million tax case

TMZ revealed in an article that a number of official documents show that the US tax agency claimed Pacquiao didn't pay $18.31 million in federal income taxes from 2006 to 2010, the breakdown of which is as follows:

  • 2006 -- $1,160,324.30
  • 2007 -- $2,035,992.50
  • 2008 -- $2,862,437.11
  • 2009 -- $8,022,915.87
  • 2010 -- $4,231,999.01

Pacquiao's US tax woes came just weeks after his own bout with the BIR in the Philippines over unpaid taxes.

In a radio interview with DZMM's Korina Sanchez, BIR Commissioner Kim Henares discussed this issue pointing out that her bureau has not received any confirmation from the IRS regarding a tax case against Pacquiao.

"Ang analysis ko doon ay maaring it came out of the other rumor that he's a green card holder. Kasi if you're a green card holder, if you're a non-resident, you only pay for your US income. But if you're a resident in US, pati ang income mo sa Pilipinas, kailangan i-report din. I believe that's where it's coming from. Whether it's true or not, only the IRS can say that," Henares said.
"Mga contrata at documentation nila hindi ayos. Yun ang nagiging problema. Kung nagiging problema nila sa Pilipinas ay ganun din magiging problema nila sa America (Their contracts and documents are not in order. That's the problem. If they had that problem in the Philippines, then they will also have the same problem in America) ... What I can foresee is if their bookkeeping is as bad as what we see here, magkakaproblema ho talaga siya (he will really have a problem)," she added.

On Tuesday, Pacquiao denied he had a green card or a permanent resident status in the United States.

BIR had earlier filed a tax evasion case against Pacquiao due to delinquencies amounting to P2.2 billion ($50.3 US million), on prize earnings from his boxing matches in 2008 and 2009.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, however, debunked the BIR's claim saying Pacquiao paid his taxes properly in the US and has certified true copies of his US tax returns.

The long awaited nuptials was held at Lourdes Church in Tagaytay, with the reception at Hacienda Isabella.

Gonzalez is the son of celebrity chef Gene Gonzalez, while Cojuangco is the daughter of businessman Peping Cojuangco and former Tarlac governor Tingting Cojuangco.

The couple have a four-month-old daughter named Lucia Margaret Ysabel.

According to a Philstar lifestyle article, they first met when she enrolled in the Gonzalez family-owned culinary school around seven years ago. After she graduated, "everything just fell into place.”

Gino says: “That pretty face caught my attention and we would have good conversations because we are the same age and I guess we have a lot of common friends. Which is why it is surprising that I only met her when we were already in our late 20s. We both love to travel, to explore new places (both expensive and hole-  in-the-wall places). She knows quite a lot about cars and a lot more. Basically after she graduated from culinary school everything just fell into place.”
China says: “Gino and I get along so well. We have the same interests and we complement and take care of each other. Timing also plays a vital role in a relationship. We are at the right age and stage of our lives wherein we both would like to settle down.”

Gonzalez and Cojuangco are both into cooking with Gonzales hosting his own TV show, "Chefscapades," and Cojuangco who used to host a cooking show called "My Favorite Recipes."
