Are you in favor of the death penalty for the Philippines?
Just recently, a serial robber cum rapist was apprehended by police authorities while he's about to attack another coffee shop in Quezon City.
The suspect was responsible for the numerous cases of robbery in Metro Manila establishments, several of which were restaurants. Not only did he rob customers and employees, but he also raped them.
This incident plus the rising number of criminalities such as rapes, riding-in-tandem killing sprees, and murderous carjackings have reached sky-high proportions that most Filipinos are already pushing for the return of the death penalty.
But the Philippines is among many countries worldwide that oppose the death penalty.
The Death Penalty is still enforced around the globe
According to a news article from SkyNews, fifty-eight nations (58) enforce the death penalty, including three of the world's most powerful countries; the United States, China and Japan.
Below are the countries that impose the death penalty:
Afghanistan, Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belarus, Belize, Botswana, Chad, China, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cuba, Dominica, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Guatemala, Guinea, Guyana, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Jamaica, Japan, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Lesotho, Libya, Malaysia, Nigeria, North Korea, Oman, Pakistan, Palestinian Authority, Qatar, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Taiwan, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, United Arab Emirates, United States of America, Vietnam, Yemen and Zimbabwe.
At least 778 people were executed worldwide in 2013, excluding China.
China keeps its executions secret. Amnesty International estimates 'thousands'. A report by US human rights group the Dui Hua Foundation estimates 2400 executions took place in China in 2013.
The US executed 39 people.
Iran executed at least 369 people in 2013, Iraq at least 169, and Saudi Arabia 79.
In January 2014, Senator Vicente "Tito" Sotto filed SB 2080, or "An Act Imposing Death Penalty in the Philippines". The proposal is pending in the Senate committee on constitutional amendments and revision of laws.
Sotto said it is about time the government should take immediate and necessary call to prevent heinous crimes, such as murder and rape.
