Sources have told Global News the Calgary-born, Victoria-raised actor may have died of an overdose, but the coroners have not confirmed the cause of death.

Monteith, best known for his role as Finn Hudson on Glee, was public about his struggle with addiction, most recently admitting himself to rehab in April, according to reports.

This was not his first time seeking help and he regularly discussed his battles with addiction, saying in past interviews he took “anything and everything” and was “lucky to be alive.”

Police and the BC Coroners Service are still investigating the cause of his sudden death and said that further tests will be needed to determine how Monteith died, however foul play is not suspected.

An autopsy is set for Monday.

Monteith checked into the Fairmont Pacific Rim on July 6 and was found dead in his room after failing to check out Saturday at noon.

He had been dead for several hours. Police said he was alone at the time of death.

On Monteith’s Twitter account he described himself as “tall, awkward, canadian, actor, drummer, person.”

His last tweet was sent on Friday.

Tributes from celebrities and fans poured in on social media mourning Monteith. Many shared condolences for his family, friends and girlfriend of more than a year, fellow Glee star Lea Michele.

Michele issued a statement through her rep asking for privacy.

“We ask that everyone kindly respect Lea’s privacy during this devastating time,” the statement said.--Source: Global News
