Ikabod Bubwit, one of the most memorable comic characters created in the 1980s by Nonoy Marcelo returns this year.
But this time, the humorous rat series will be relaunched in digital and full color, entirely different from its previous incarnation, by DC Robert Publishing.
In order to accommodate the comic strips’ non-Filipino fans, it will also be made available in English version.
The series follows the story of Ikabod, a rodent, as he faces new adventures in the realm of Dagalandia (which closely resembles the city of Manila), with his signature jokes and antics.
Joining Ikabod in his return are the comics series’ other beloved characters including Bos Peter, his father; Lolo Umboy, his grandfather; Mis Wah, his teacher; Agoy, his cousin; and his four gay siblings.
Aside from its sharp humor, the series also rose to popularity for satirizing the Philippine political landscape for nearly four decades including the term of Ferdinand Marcos, Cory Aquino, Joseph Estrada, and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Created by cartoonist Nonoy Marcelo, the comics series is expected to remain relevant today by resonating the social problems plaguing the Philippines in the present.
For the successful run of Ikabod, Marcelo has received the Catholic Mass Media Award for print journalism – a rare feat since the award is usually given to writers or columnists.
Marcelo’s talent was also recognized internationally as he was the only Asian cartoonist featured in Time Magazine’s cover story, “Mighty Pens”. At the same time, he is also the only cartoonist who became the recipient of the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Centennial Artist Award.
Comic fans and enthusiasts may now download a copy of Ikabod at www.ikabod.com.
According to DC Robert Publishing, over 30 issues will also be made available for mobile download in the future.--Source: ABS-CBN News
