Believe it or not -- there's an ordinary pair of shoes that generates enough electricity to power up your smartphone when you're walking.
Angelo Casimiro, the 15-year-old student from the Philippines has invented a device that generates an energy from your steps to make electricity to charge smartphones or any portable device by simply walking.
The teenager submitted his project dubbed as “Electricity-Generating Footwear,” to 2014 Google Science Fair, which is a global online science and technology competition which is open to all students and teams from ages 13 to 18 years old.
Due to his interest in renewable energy, Casimiro made an insole generator which he placed inside a pair of some old sneakers and connected the insole generator to the battery of a portable powerbank. After generating enough energy from walking, it could then be used to charge a smartphones or smartwatch or any portable device.
The teenaged boy stated that the project cost him just P304, which is quite cheap thanks to the recycled materials which he incorporated into his project.
Angelo shares that he does tutorials and write-ups regarding on his projects, and published them on a number of websites. He has also participated and won in robotics competitions.
The Grand Prize includes a 10-day trip to the Galapagos Islands with National Geographic Expeditions, an experience at the Virgin Galactic Spaceport and $50,000 worth of Google scholarship funding. Not only that, “Grand Prize winner’s school will receive a $10,000 grant toward classroom computing or science lab equipment.”
The regional finalists and local award winners are scheduled to be announced on 26th of June, the global finalists and the “Science in Action Award” winner, on the other hand are set to reveal in August 6th.--Source: Centrio Times
