The city of brotherly love will be the site of the first memorial in the country to honor those who lost their lives in the Philippine war of independence.

First Filipino mural in Philadelphia to be unveiled

Filipinos in the greater Philadelphia area are set to unveil a 22-foot tall mural called “Alab ng Puso” along Bustleton Avenue where many Filipino businesses are located.

The artwork is the first outdoor Filipino mural on the East Coast and the first Filipino landmark in Philadelphia.

The Filipino community, led by Filipino American Association of Philadelphia, Inc. (FAAPI), worked with the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program (MAP) in creating this towering tribute to 100 years of Filipinos in Greater Philadelphia and over 425 years of Filipinos in America.

“The Filipino mural is a gift of this generation of Filipino-Americans to the people of Philadelphia and the world and to future generations,” said FAAPI president Dr. Rommel Rivera.

The mural artist, Eliseo Art Silva, is a nationally-recognized artist who has been featured by the Smithsonian institution twice. Silva created his first map mural in 2002 and completed over fifty murals in the East Coast, twenty of which were under contract with mural arts.--Source: The Pinoy
