Are you, at present, a Filipino living in Europe?

Meta warns that it could shut down Facebook and Instagram in your region. But why?

Here's why Facebook and Instagram may shut down in Europe

In an annual report submitted by Meta, Facebook's parent company, to US regulator SEC, is the company's warning that Facebook and Instagram platforms could soon stop for European users.

This is because European laws for data protection now do not allow Meta to transfer the users' data of the Europeans to their servers in the USA anymore.

Meta claims that the company's ability to process users' data from different countries is crucial for business, both operationally and for the sale of advertisements, a significant segment of the American social media giant's revenue.

Meanwhile, European data protection laws govern the retention of EU data under EU jurisdiction.

"If a new transatlantic data transfer framework is not adopted and we are unable to continue to rely on SCCs (standard contractual clauses) or rely upon other alternative means of data transfers from Europe to the United States, we will likely be unable to offer a number of our most significant products and services, including Facebook and Instagram, in Europe." Facebook said.
