Pasig City has joined the "car-free" movement and has turned Emerald Avenue, one of the busiest streets in the city, into a car-free zone on Sundays.
The Open Street Sundays on Emerald Avenue began Sunday, November 21, 2021 where vehicles are not allowed to pass on said road during Sundays, from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
From now on, 12 hours every Sunday, only pedestrians can use Emerald Avenue, where they can do jogging, biking, zumba, among other things. According to the Pasig local government, this is one of the ways to increase the number of "open public spaces" in the city that people can visit for free.
The public, however, is reminded that minimum public health standards will continue to be enforced on Open Street Sundays.
A number of major cities around the world have joined the "car-free" movement, which aims to reduce air pollution and improve safety among residents.
Most cities that are starting to ban cars are located in Europe, though a few others, such as New York, are making considerable strides.
