Due to concerns over the rising number of vehicles in Metro Manila the past weeks, the Metro Manila Development Authority said on Friday that the 'Number Coding Scheme' program could make a comeback sometime next week.
According to MMDA Chairperson Benjamin Abalos, he will write a recommendation to National Capital Region (NCR) mayors about the resumption of the number coding scheme, which would limit the number of vehicles on major roads in Metro Manila.
Traffic has roared back in the metro as more people are returning to their jobs, and more and more people are moving around NCR after it was placed under Alert Level 2 due to a decline of COVID-19 cases.
But Abalos said that though they are reinstating the number coding scheme, they are planning to implement it only in the afternoon so that people can still use their cars in the morning when going to work, and then just wait for a later hour at night when they go home.
In MMDA's recommendation, vehicles would only be barred from major roads during the afternoon rush hour or from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., which means people with private vehicles can still use their cars.
"Ngayon dinagdagan namin ng choices. Why? Because if you’re going to implement the color coding, you are going to deprive 1 person of the use of the car for one whole day. Hindi niya magagamit ang kotse niya, anong gagawin niya? Pipila siya sa jeep, pipila siya sa bus, eh alam ko 70 percent pa lang yata ang capacity,” Abalos said.
"So ‘yong fourth (option) naman baka pupwedeng gawin nating hapon lang ang color coding para may window, so that pwede mo pa ring gamitin ang kotse mo,” he added.
During the past few weeks, hundreds of thousands of vehicles have traveled throughout Metro Manila, a high not seen since before the pandemic.
