Newly-appointed Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos, Jr. mulls on moving the motorcyle (MC) lane at the rightmost portion of the Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (EDSA).
This he said during a press conference yesterday at the MMDA’s central office in Makati shortly after taking oath as the agency’s new chairman.
The EDSA motorcycle lane, which originally sits along the second lane from the center island, lost its spot to cars when the EDSA Busway was designated at the leftmost lane.
Moving the MC lane to the rightmost portion, which places the motorcycles side by side with bicycles, may effectively reduce the number of motorcycle-related accidents, particularly along EDSA, Abalos said.
Abalos was the mayor of Mandaluyong City when the controversial “Anti-riding-in-tandem” ordinance was enforced via City Ordinance No. 550, which was amended in 2018. The said ordinance, aimed to prevent crimes perpetrated by criminals riding-in-tandem, makes pillion 'angkas' riding unlawful and comes with hefty fines for its violators.
