Former censors chief Grace Poe-Llamanzares surprised the Philippine nation when she emerged as the front runner in the country's 2013 senatorial polls, according to the latest data of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
“I never expected to be number one. Nagulat ako. I just keep praying that I won’t be in the 11th or 12th place,” Poe said in an interview aired over ANC.
Poe, who only ranked as high as fourth at the height of the campaign, attributed her victory to the help of her friend, reelectionist Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero.
She thanked Escudero, who ranks third in Comelec partial and unofficial count, for always bringing her along in his personal campaign sorties throughout the campaign.
Despite her lead, monitoring the latest developments from the Comelec did not allow the Boston College graduate to rest well, saying she only managed to get three hours of sleep on Monday evening.
Poe hopes that her lead would be enough to last until the end of official counting at the PICC Complex in Manila.
She also offered her victory to her late father, while promising to stay true to his advocacies and platforms for the poor.
